[2003-06-30] Small Business Server and e-Commerce Capacity
Question: I'm a partner (one of six) in a small business and am trying to deploy our web site with an attendant web-based application (survey data collection and reporting). The system is being designed in Java and is using SQL Server as the back-end. We were thinking of launching this on a box running MS Small Business Server 2000 (as it would then also obviate a number of other small business software needs, such as email with Exchange server, internet security, etc.). Is this deployment strategy reasonable? Does SBS handle enough anonymous TCP/IP connections to do e-commerce where we don't know how many people my be trying to connect to our database to buy stuff? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

[2003-06-30] Stop the Press - Software Delivered to Schedule!

[2003-06-30] SQL Server Startup Parameters
Every now and then we all have to reread something we may already know because frankly if you are like me, you can't keep everything in your head. I tend to go back over tips and tricks and even database concepts when I have time so I will maybe remember enough about it so when a problem arises I at least know where to go look and find the answer. It is with, that I want to write about my latest re-education attempt.

[2003-06-27] Building a Better Sidebar
When I first heard about .NET's user controls I thought, "What's this? A proprietary format for include files?" I argued with a colleague about this newest offering from Microsoft, dismissing user controls as some sort of hype from Redmond.

[2003-06-23] How to create WAP Pages in ColdFusion
Using of ColdFusion to create dynamic WAP pages is much easier than using other languages like PHP, ASP or JSP (a very hard one!). In fact, ColdFusion is a very good for one new to the WAP world to learn how to create dynamic WAP pages because it is very easy to learn.

[2003-06-22] Monitoring a print queue from Visual Basic.Net
Although the VB.Net printer handling has improved immeasurably over that offered by Visual Basic 6 there is still a need to turn to the Windows API in order to monitor a print queue.

[2003-06-18] Difference "using" Directive and Statement
The using directive is used for: 1. creating an alias for a class or a namespace. 2. permiting the use of types/classes in a namespace without having to specify the namespace.

[2003-06-16] Multiplexing filehandles with select() in perl

[2003-06-16] Auditing Your SQL Server Environment Part I
Over the last few years I have been a roving SQL Server DBA contractor and tended to work contacts in small and mid-size companies that involved organizing, documenting and then tuning/optimizing existing SQL Servers in those companies. I have noticed one very disturbing truth over the years; no one seems to document anything. In fact, I was usually thankful if I could find something or someone who knew the sa passwords on each SQL Server installation, let alone knew anything else about their setups.

[2003-06-13] A Simple Web Search Engine
Every user expects a search engine on any Web site they visit. Unfortunately, search engines are extremely complex to develop. They require massive amounts of resources and time to implement. Today I'll show you how to use a MySQL (or any SQL database) to create your own basic search engine.

[2003-06-13] Fear of Non-Progress
Most middle managers love to see source code. They love to see reams upon reams of source code, the earlier in the project lifecycle the better. This to them represents progress. If "90%" of the project code has been written, then the project must be "90% complete".

[2003-06-07] What's Really Hot in CF MX
So you're a ColdFusion guru and you thought you'd seen it all. You've mastered the ColdFusion 5 tags and functions completely, and you know what you can, and more importantly, what you cannot do with ColdFusion. You also were a little anxious when Macromedia took over, and some of you sigh at the loss of Spectra and try to keep the community going. So what's next? What's in the new ColdFusion MX for us gurus?

[2003-06-05] Writing Pluggable ColdFusion Modules
When you have to bugfix, extend or review a ColdFusion application, there's a good chance that you'll find yourself browsing a directory tree representing the navigation on the site. Within these directories, typically some 40 or 50 files with names like list.cfm, insertform.cfm, insertaction.cfm, etc. reside.

[2003-06-03] Hotmail using C# - A HTTPMail client under .NET
The great thing about the POP mail protocol is that it is a well-documented open standard, making writing a mail client to collect mail from a POP box a relatively painless process. Armed with basic knowledge of POP, or SMTP it is possible to write proxies which do a variety of useful things, such filter out spam or junk mail, or provide an e-mail answering machine service. Unfortunately, in trying to write a standalone client for Hotmail, the world's most popular web-based mailing system, the fact that no POP gateway exists rapidly becomes a problem.

[2003-06-03] Brewing Trouble
Admit it: When you're faced with a lengthy checklist for testing, you're tempted to skip steps. Some of the items aren't really necessary, are they? They might be so obvious that there's no need to include them in the list. In this week's column, Elisabeth Hendrickson offers some advice on constructing useful checklists that are brief but complete.

[2003-06-02] How to implement generators in MSSQL server
One of the important properties of any client-server application is its serviceability and an intuitive user interface. Many widely used relational database management systems have a lot of opportunities to choose different user interface features. Intending to make a program decision easy and convenient, and, at the same time, to keep the referential integrity of the database, it is often necessary to know the values of the key fields of the processed tables before their real inserting.

[2003-06-02] Use Case Management with Rational Rose and Rational RequisitePro
  1. How do you organize your use cases?
  2. Can you tell in which release a particular use case is implemented?
  3. How do you know that the entire system functionality is tested?
  4. Which tests are affected by a change in a use case?
If the inability to answer these questions has caused you frustration, schedule setbacks, or the delivery of products that have missed the mark, read on.

[2003-06-02] Using the Network Functions in C# (Part I - User Functions)
Welcome to another "How-to" article in Visual C#.NET. This article will focus on the Network functions within the Win32 API library associated with Network Management. The first thing is to point out is that there are two ways to manage users using the .NET Framework, the first being the Active Directory method, as you will notice you need to have Active Directory Installed and if you were managing users on a small network or on a stand alone station Active Directory won't be install and it would be not worth installing it.

[2003-06-02] Electronic currency using SIM Access Profile
You might remember an ad campaign in which a woman approaches a soft drink vending machine alongside a young male executive. The executive rummages through his pants pocket to find, to his dismay, that he has no change to purchase a cool drink on a hot afternoon. The woman then pulls out her cell phone, presses a few buttons, and a soda can drops down from the vending machine. The ad was meant to show a future of a seamless, interactive world. The SIM Access Profile, released by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), makes such transactions a reality, allowing a consumer to use a cellular device to obtain, for example, a 50-cent soft drink without spending 25 cents on a cell phone airtime charge.

[2003-06-02] ID Verification using JSP
One of the most important parts of web development is to make sure that only authorized users get access to certain areas of the site. This tutorial takes a look at various steps involved in making JSP pages which validate a user ID and password from a MS Access database which contains the username and password.
